GLOBAL WARMING FACTS

IsGlobal Warming Happening?

Yes. Earth is already showing many signs of worldwide climate change.

• Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degree Celsius) around the world since 1880, much of this in recent decades, according to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

• The rate of warming is increasing. The 20th century's last two decades were the hottest in 400 years and possibly the warmest for several millennia, according to a number of climate studies. And the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that 11 of the past 12 years are among the dozen warmest since 1850.

• The Arctic is feeling the effects the most. Average temperatures in Alaska, western Canada, and eastern Russia have risen at twice the global average, according to the multinational Arctic Climate Impact Assessment report compiled between 2000 and 2004.

• Arctic ice is rapidly disappearing, and the region may have its first completely ice-free summer by 2040 or earlier. Polar bears and indigenous cultures are already suffering from the sea-ice loss.

• Glaciers and mountain snows are rapidly melting—for example, Montana's Glacier National Park now has only 27 glaciers, versus 150 in 1910. In the Northern Hemisphere, thaws also come a week earlier in spring and freezes begin a week later.

• Coral reefs, which are highly sensitive to small changes in water temperature, suffered the worst bleaching—or die-off in response to stress—ever recorded in 1998, with some areas seeing bleach rates of 70 percent. Experts expect these sorts of events to increase in frequency and intensity in the next 50 years as sea temperatures rise.

• An upsurge in the amount of extreme weather events, such as wildfires, heat waves, and strong tropical storms, is also attributed in part to climate change by some experts.

Are Humans Causing It?

The report, based on the work of some 2,500 scientists in more than 130 countries, concluded that humans have caused all or most of the current planetary warming. Human-caused global warming is often called anthropogenic climate change.

• Industrialization, deforestation, and pollution have greatly increased atmospheric concentrations of water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, all greenhouse gases that help trap heat near Earth's surface. (See an interactive feature on how global warming works.)

• Humans are pouring carbon dioxide into the atmosphere much faster than plants and oceans can absorb it.

• These gases persist in the atmosphere for years, meaning that even if such emissions were eliminated today, it would not immediately stop global warming.

• Some experts point out that natural cycles in Earth's orbit can alter the planet's exposure to sunlight, which may explain the current trend. Earth has indeed experienced warming and cooling cycles roughly every hundred thousand years due to these orbital shifts, but such changes have occurred over the span of several centuries. Today's changes have taken place over the past hundred years or less.

• Other recent research has suggested that the effects of variations in the sun's output are "negligible" as a factor in warming, but other, more complicated solar mechanisms could possibly play a role.

  2. Its really nicely briefed article, Mam.

One thing Puzzled me that, how the average temperature rise at/near the poles is higher then the rest of the world?

Thanks mam, For all your efforts to keep us encouraged for doing the things better and better.

  3. From the above facts it seems that earth has become like a slow ticking time-bomb.
It's very sad that this planet is dying. And we, the human race are killing it.If the earth dies, we die. But, if we die the earth survives. So, lets not destroy other lives, but to save it. Take action and STOP GLOBAL WARMING!!!

  4. hollah mam,
i must say above articles are very informative and make us awake about what is happening around us. i should say each of us has a big responsible to prevent the melting of ice glacier. we can achieve harmony environment only by making the pure motivation to benefit all life on Earth and not simply our own selves. protect the earth and live simply as possible with minimum use of unrecylable physical goods. our future depend on us.
i congrates mam for innitiating such types of courses that helps to realise importance of earth.

  8. hi mam this is sejal
I found this very interesting and informative.Inspite of lots of afford still there is no reduction in carbondioxide emission. There are lots of such incident still occuring in the world. On friday i read an article in times of india about climate change. So i think its time for us to join hands to fight aganist this giant problem.

  11. The most coherent explanation is that climate is changing because of burning of fossil fuels and felling forests. The health, environmental, and economic costs of inaction are rapidly becoming unmanageable. Stabilizing the climate will require a clean energy transition that will also benefit public health, improve energy security, and can become the engine of economic growth for this 21st century.this is sunil patil

  12. Earth's temperature has increased by about 1 degree Fahrenheit (0.56 degrees Celsius) in the last century. Most of the warming in the last 50 years is attributed to human activities. for solving the problem we should decrease the carbon emmison rate. this is sunil patil

  13. Hi Madam I am Jayveer.
I have read the article. Madam it is really very informative and i learned so many things from this Article.Actually this environment is not given by our ancestors but we have borrowed it from our next generation. Global warming is really a burning issue. We must take some strong actions against it.As the heat is increasing day by day, i am sure that one day, the Himalaya will lose its charm.Mam its my request to you, plz keep on giving us this kind of information so that we can learn more about the environment.

  16. hello mam I am Jitendra. mam I referred this article with open mind. It is very informative and interesting article. Mam I agree with you on topic the environment study should have in school and out of school because students learn more in practical way. And also we can aware about environment problem trough mass media. Due to the Experiential Practice students will use problem-solving, different skills, creative solutions. Now a days globle warming is the danger problem for earth and human being. So, we all should take steps for prevent the problem.
